Russell Hughes: Raised on family farms near Minco and Hinton, Oklahoma, Russell began drawing when he was in the
sixth grade. His first art training was through a correspondence course, while still in high school. Later
he studied commercial art at Oklahoma City University and became an illustrator for the Federal Aviation
Administration, a career that lasted for over 30 years.
His fine arts career began in the 1960s, when he studied with several noted water-colorists and oil painters, including Robert E. Wood and Jack Vallee. Working in oil, acrylic and watercolor, Russell's paintings cover a wide variety of subjects, but focus mainly on Oklahoma and Western landscapes. His sensitive, peaceful paintings of nature touch a responsive and lasting chord in his viewers. He strives for good draftsmanship in his work and paints in a realistic, but not photographic style. His work has received numerous awards over years and is in many private and corporate collections across the nation and abroad. He is a member of the Oklahoma Art Guild..
