Dan & Elaine Nealey:    Dan creates vases, goblets, boxes, and other objects using a wood lathe. He uses his skill, imagination, and understanding of wood’s unique characteristics to envision the form that will remain after the excess has been cut away. In some, he inlays metals and semi-precious stones into the natural knotholes and voids in the wood.

After finishing the lathe work, he gives the pieces that are turned from plainer woods to his wife Elaine, who then enhances them through the use of ink or wood burning. Before beginning to work on a piece, she studies it to determine how she can best complement its form and the natural characteristics of the wood through the use color and shading.

When she has completed her work, she gives the piece back to Dan, who then applies several layers of finish over a period of days. Finally, he buffs it until he has attained a soft, uniform sheen, adding warmth and depth to the piece.

Their work can be found at various art festivals and galleries within Oklahoma and in the homes of collectors around the world.
